Simplifying My Life

Simplifying My Life

When it comes to everyday life we all have good intentions, well in the most part. We all want to "simplify, clarify, economize", as the slogan from an old movie I can remember goes (more on that later)*.

But most of the times we talk the talk but do not walk the walk. What is it that is holding us back? What makes us stick to our old ways and stops us from changing our lives? Are we just imposters, are we fooling ourselves?

A new year has come and new resolutions have been made. Marking the reset of nature's annual cycle, this change of number at the end of the date provides an opportunity for meaningful change.

Let us make the most out of the opportunity given to us. I personally have no new year's resolution for 2025 other than to stick to the last year's resolution to make my life simpler.

We make away with the attachments to old forms and attitudes and embrace a more minimal functional life that serves our needs and our future.

*In actuality the quote is attributed to the famous architect Mies van der Rohe. The embodiment of his minimalist point of view can be considered the Edith Farnsworth House which currently operates as a museum. The house design can be considered to depict the struggle between the modern minimalist approach, where form is determined by the structural problem being solved and the attachment to classical form.

The three principles of this philosophy in the design of the house can be summarized as follows:

Edith Farnsworth House
  • Simplicity: The design of the Farnsworth House embodies the principle of simplicity. Every element is essential and serves a purpose, with no superfluous details.
  • Clarity: The use of glass and the open floor plan create a sense of clarity and transparency. The house is a clear expression of its structural elements and materials.
  • Economy: While the house was not inexpensive to build, the design itself is economical in its use of space and materials. The minimalist approach ensures that nothing is wasted.

I am not a life coach I am just recording my own personal journey, inner and outer to a more meaningful life and to what that might mean and this blog is my accountability partner.
